Medicine in Transition

The medicine of the future is increasingly returning to its Hippocratic roots – the active strengthening of natural health resources. The focus of medical action is not the suppression of disease “pathogenesis”, but rather its prevention and the active support of health resources “salutogenesis“.

Accordingly, the salutogenic medicine is not only focused on the lifespan, but rather on the extension of healthspan, respectively, on the promotion of health, the strengthening of resilience factors and maintaining the quality of life.

The transformation of the latest findings from systems biology basic research promotes the development of novel, health medicine treatment concepts and a re-evaluation of classical naturopathic therapy methods. The main focus is on the active support of the body’s own regulation of organ systems as well as the targeted and sustainable regeneration of vital cell and organ tissues.

Plague of the 21st century

Due to the dramatic increase of diseases with chronic inflammatory and/or auto-immunogenic genesis, experts already speak of the “plague of the 21st century”. In addition to these clinical pictures, mental disorders, states of exhaustion and dementia syndromes are increasingly attributed to the persistent dysregulation of the immune system.

Human Medical Days in Bingen

The Human Medical Days were first launched 12 years ago on the initiative of Stephanie Dreyer. From the beginning, its central intention was to build bridges between practical medicine and clinical research to promote a salutogenic integrative medicine of the future. In this tradition, the event has since established itself as an internationally recognized medical-scientific forum for physicians, therapists and researchers, but also for interested laypersons and patients.

Radicals promote regeneration, but also inflammation: “The dose makes the difference”

Physiologically, free radicals are primarily formed within the scope of energy transformation. If they accumulate in body tissue, they are able to destroy cellular and molecular structures. For this reason, the organism has antioxidant protective systems, which can neutralise radicals. If these systems are overloaded, the resulting oxidative stress triggers inflammatory reactions in particular. This creates a vicious circle that can be broken with naturopathic methods.

Dysregulated inflammatory process: The inflammatory Reflex

The nervous system has the ability to reflexively intervene in inflammatory processes and modulate the immune response. It is interconnected via neuronal immunological processes. Scientists have found out, that cholinergic neurons are able to inhibit inflammation. Via a neuronally controlled inflammatory reflex, the nervous system is able to intervene, e.g. in the case of dysregulated inflammatory reactions. This lecture describes clinical correlations, therapeutic procedures and patient cases from medical practice.

Is chronic inflammation the plague of the 21st century?

The term “inflammation” wrongly has negative connotations. On the contrary, the process of acute inflammation is an urgently important step, that allows our immune system to successfully fight off microbial pathogens. The situation is completely different with chronic inflammatory processes, which are the basis for hundreds of millions of cases of type 2 diabetes worldwide. Besides genetic predisposition lifestyle (e.g. diet, exercise, smoking) plays a central role. This discussion will present the interactions between metabolism, chronic inflammation, the immune system and the intestinal microbiome. Finally, new scientific data on nutrition and ageing will be discussed.

Regeneration with vesicle-based therapy through partial reprogramming and targeted differentiation

The advent of reprogramming technology enables the use of iPSCs in combination with established protocols for directed differentiation protocols to rejuvenate adult stem cells. Improvements in reprogramming methods have increased the efficiency of iPSC derivation and the quality of the iPSC lines used. The generation of immunocompetent cells from iPSCs continues to improve the quality for extracellular vesicle -based therapy.
